How to spring clean your caravan or motorhome mattress

  • 10th April 2026

Before the touring season begins, many caravan and motorhome owners focus on packing essentials and checking their vehicle is road ready. One important job often overlooked is refreshing the sleeping area.

Your caravan mattress or motorhome mattress can easily collect dust, debris and moisture over time, particularly if the van has been stored for a few months. Because many caravan beds have unusual shapes, these mattresses cannot always be flipped like a standard mattress at home. This makes regular cleaning even more important.

A proper spring clean helps keep your caravan bedding fresh and ensures your motorhome bed is a comfortable place to return to after a day exploring.

Why cleaning your caravan mattress matters

Keeping your caravan mattress or motorhome mattress clean is about more than appearances. Over time, caravan mattresses can collect dust mites, skin particles and small spills that gradually affect hygiene.

If these build up, they can impact how comfortable your caravan bed feels and may even trigger irritation for some people. Freshening the mattress and washing your caravan bedding regularly helps create a cleaner and healthier sleeping environment.

It also improves comfort. Sleeping on a clean surface with fresh motorhome bedding makes a noticeable difference when you are travelling regularly throughout the season.

Step 1: Remove and wash all caravan bedding

Begin by stripping the bed completely. Remove pillowcases, duvet covers, mattress protectors and all caravan bed sheets or motorhome bed sheets.

Wash these items according to the instructions on the care label. Bedding used in a caravan or motorhome often benefits from more frequent washing than bedding used at home. Many owners prefer to wash their caravan bedding after each trip so it can be stored clean and dry until the next journey.

While the bedding is off, it is also a good opportunity to check whether anything needs replacing. Worn caravan bed sheets, thinning protectors or faded motorhome bedding may no longer provide the comfort you expect.

Step 2: Vacuum the caravan mattress thoroughly

Dust and small particles settle naturally on a mattress surface, particularly when a caravan or motorhome is stored for a long period.

Use a vacuum cleaner to carefully clean the entire surface of the caravan mattress or motorhome mattress. Move slowly across the mattress and repeat the process a few times to lift as much debris as possible.

If your vacuum has an upholstery attachment, this can help remove dirt from deeper within the mattress fabric. The softer brush is designed to clean delicate surfaces and works well for caravan mattresses.

Regular vacuuming keeps the mattress fresh and prevents dust from settling into the fibres.

Step 3: Treat stains carefully

Once the mattress has been vacuumed, check for any visible marks or stains.

If you find any, spot cleaning is usually enough. The key is to avoid using too much liquid, particularly with memory foam mattresses. Excess moisture can take a long time to dry and may encourage mould.

A mild upholstery cleaner can often remove small marks. Alternatively, a simple mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide can be lightly applied to the area before blotting with a clean cloth.

Another option some people prefer is a paste made from baking soda and white vinegar. Apply it gently to the stained area and allow it to dry before brushing away the residue.

Always test any cleaning method on a small hidden area first to make sure it does not affect the fabric.

Step 4: Freshen the mattress with baking soda

After spot cleaning, the final step is deodorising the mattress.

Sprinkle a light layer of baking soda across the surface of your caravan mattress or motorhome mattress and leave it for several hours. Many people prefer to leave it overnight so it has time to absorb any lingering odours.

Once finished, vacuum the mattress again to remove the baking soda completely.

This simple step helps eliminate stale smells and leaves the sleeping area feeling much fresher.

Consider adding a caravan topper or motorhome topper

While cleaning your mattress, it is also a good time to assess overall comfort.

If your caravan mattress or motorhome mattress feels slightly firm or uneven, a caravan topper or motorhome topper can improve the surface without replacing the mattress entirely. Toppers add an extra cushioning layer and help smooth out minor imperfections.

They are also easy to remove, making them practical for touring vehicles where bedding may need to be stored during the day.

A clean bed makes every trip better

Preparing your sleeping area before the touring season begins can transform how your caravan or motorhome feels.

Fresh caravan bedding, supportive mattresses and well maintained bed sheets help create a comfortable space to return to each evening. After a long walk, a scenic drive or a day exploring somewhere new, a clean and comfortable motorhome bed makes all the difference.
